A Spoon in a Teacup

Reflection on life and self

As a stare at my empty cup, I see a silver spoon gently laying in it. I used that spoon to stir sugar in my coffee about an hour ago. Now it is just laying there, resting in the cup. The cup is resting on a plate.

The spoon did its job already. I know it can be used for many types of tasks in the future.

For now, it rests. Because it has done its job. And I love looking at it.

Perhaps my meeting with this spoon will only be this one. Only one meeting in this lifetime. Or maybe not. If I come back to this café, I might see the same spoon. I’ll never know.

For now, I will enjoy its beauty. And I am grateful for how it made my day today — witnessing myself appreciate this inanimate yet beautiful thing.

I can feel this spoon.

Are we like spoons in a teacup? That we serve different purposes in this lifetime, so there are moments when we just need to rest and appreciate ourselves.

What do we stir? Do we feel the beauty we emanate in our environment?

Can we feel beautiful when we rest? Like a spoon in a teacup.
