Society in general tells us we must focus, but doesn’t really tell us how to. Parents tell their kids to focus but don’t tell them how to. We tell others they must focus without the how-to.

How often do we tell ourselves that we must focus but don’t learn the how-to and practice it?

Quite often.

So often that we do it many hours a day. And eventually, with daily practice, we become experts in non-focus in a few years.

Shining the awareness of attention in whatever we do could be a good way to practice focus. In writing this article, I was aware of the process, the goal, and all the potential distractions. I prioritized my goal while shining awareness on everything that was happening in and around me.

This practice of focus is just like meditation.

Becoming aware of exactly what is going on in my system while I close my eyes and meditate — breathing in and out, heart beating, sensations in the body, and the thoughts that are coming and going in my brain.

Everything is flowing, while I guide my awareness, and focus on the practice of meditation itself.

The one thing so important about focus is knowing the how-to.
